My advice

How do you deal with your bad neighbors? My advice is, "Talk to them, negotiate with them, and deal with THEM!" — if they're open, honest and reasonable.

However, if they're unreasonable, if they're in denial mode, then talk with your landlord — if it's a rental building, and if your landlord is willing to deal with your bad neighbors.

Alternatively, talk with your condo association — if it's a condo building, and if they're willing to deal with your bad neighbors.

Or, talk to the cops — if they're willing to deal with your bad neighbors. Check with the law. In your town there might be a noise ordinance, so after 10 pm you CAN call cops.

In other words, how do you deal with your bad neighbors? Exhaust your CIVIL options first. Why? Because, if you're nice, pleasant and reasonable, sometimes you CAN deal with your bad neighbors.

However, if it's a condo building, and if your bad neighbors are a couple of impoverished, unemployed losers on welfare whose only asset is the condo that they live in, then — even if you DO know how to deal with bad neighbors — it's highly unlikely that they will sell or move, just for you, just to please you!

My best advice

How do you deal with your bad neighbors? My best advice is, "MOVE as soon as possible!" Why? Because, unless you CAN deal with your bad neighbors, or unless you move, YOUR life will be a living HELL!

Why? Because you CAN renovate (beautify, fix up) your property, but you CAN'T change your neighbors. And because your peace of mind is far more important than the many little victories you may have, as to dealing with your bad neighbors. Yes, you need to move, but where do you move to?
  • To another room of your apartment, if it's a large enough apartment,

  • To a penthouse apartment, if there is one available. Or, ideally

  • To a single, detached house in a quiet residential area of a retirement community.

  • Avoid cheap motels, because you'll have noisy neighbors. Resist the temptation to save on housing!

  • Avoid college dorms and youth hostels, because you'll get noisy neighbors. Resist the temptation to save on housing!

  • Avoid rooming houses, because you'll get noisy neighbors as well as cheap landlords who are unwilling to renovate their aging floor, ceiling and wall assemblies. Resist the temptation to save on housing!

  • Avoid trailer parks, because you'll get noisy, trashy neighbors. Resist the temptation to save on housing!

  • Avoid cheap apartments and cheap rooming houses, if they're of WOOD construction, because you will get noisy neighbors as well as cheap landlords who are unwilling to renovate their aging floor, ceiling and wall assemblies. The issue is, the latter represent significant pathways for the transmission of airborn and impact sounds, such as footfalls on the floor above.
